Dumka plans major tourism boost, proposes Santhal Pargana Tourist Circuit

July 1, 2026

Kumar Prabhat

Dumka

The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has proposed an ambitious roadmap to transform Dumka and the wider Santhal Pargana region into a major tourism destination, with plans to develop a comprehensive tourist circuit, upgrade infrastructure, and generate local employment through tourism.

The proposals were discussed at a high-level DTPC meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Magistrate Abhijit Sinha at the Collectorate Auditorium. The meeting was attended by Members of Parliament, MLAs and senior district officials.

Highlighting the region’s rich natural, religious, historical and cultural heritage, Sinha stressed the need for planned development of tourist destinations and directed departments to ensure timely execution of approved projects. Key proposals include installation of a giant national flag at Masanjore, beautification of the Selfie Bridge, renovation of the historic Santhal Kata Pokhar, and improved visitor amenities such as sanitation, lighting, parking, drinking water, signages and restrooms.

Dumka MP Nalin Soren proposed bringing destinations such as Ranishwar, Tatloi and the Silgi region of Gopikandar onto the tourism map, while Dumka MLA Basant Soren called for the preservation of local history during the renovation of Santhal Kata Pokhar.

Jama MLA Dr. Louis Marandi sought comprehensive development of the Sirsanath Temple to improve facilities for pilgrims. Littipara MLA Hemlal Murmu proposed creating a Santhal Pargana Tourist Circuit linking major attractions, while Shikaripara MLA Alok Soren urged the identification of unexplored heritage sites. Jarmundi MLA Devendra Kunwar suggested constructing a grand Nandi Chowk near Basukinath Dham.

The council also resolved to strengthen road connectivity, promote destinations digitally, preserve local culture and create employment opportunities for local youth through tourism.
