At least 12 coal-laden wagons of a goods train derailed between Garhwa Road Junction and Sigsiggi railway station on Tuesday morning, disrupting train movement on the busy section. No casualty or loss of life was reported.
The derailment occurred around 10.50 am on a section falling between the jurisdiction of the Dhanbad Railway Division in Jharkhand and the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Division in Uttar Pradesh.
According to railway sources, the 58-wagon coal-laden goods train was travelling from Banadag siding in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand to Tanda in Uttar Pradesh when 12 of its wagons derailed.
Daltonganj Railway Station Superintendent Umesh Kumar said the incident occurred on the reversible line, which is used for both Up and Down train movements.
The derailment affected passenger services in the section, with three passenger trains reportedly cancelled. An Intercity Express operating from Varanasi to Ranchi was also diverted following the incident.
Railway personnel, including a large number of gangmen, were pressed into service to clear the derailed wagons and restore normal train movement. Railway sources said the debris and wreckage could be cleared by around 9 pm, subject to the progress of restoration work.
Preliminary indications suggest that a problem with the track may have led to the derailment. Railway sources pointed to the possibility of a track geometry defect, including an alignment-related flaw, though the exact cause will be established only after a detailed technical examination.
Officials are expected to conduct a detailed inspection of the affected stretch to ascertain the precise cause of the derailment and assess whether any track defect or other technical factor contributed to the incident.
