Swarnarekha, Kharkai rivers flow above danger mark, authorities put on high alert

The water levels of both the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers have risen above their respective danger marks, prompting authorities to issue an alert and urge residents of vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain vigilant.

According to the daily flood report issued by the Office of the Chief Engineer (SMP), Chandil Complex, Flood Cell, Jamshedpur, at 4 pm on Tuesday, August 18, the Subarnarekha River at Mango Bridge was flowing at 122.96 metres, against its danger level of 121.50 metres. The river was thus flowing 1.46 metres above the danger mark and was reported to be rising continuously.

The Kharkai River at Adityapur Bridge was at an even more alarming level of 134.37 metres, against its danger level of 129 metres. The river was flowing 5.37 metres above the danger mark and was also reported to be rising continuously.

The flood report noted that both rivers were above the danger level and rising, underlining the need for immediate precautionary measures by residents living near the riverbanks and in vulnerable areas.

In view of the situation, citizens have been urged to remain alert and take shelter at locations designated by the administration, if required. People have also been advised to stay in safe and elevated areas and avoid venturing near the river, low-lying localities and places prone to waterlogging.

Authorities have appealed to residents not to take unnecessary risks by approaching swollen rivers or attempting to cross waterlogged roads and submerged stretches.

All municipal bodies have been placed on high alert and instructed to ensure necessary preparedness and continuous monitoring of the situation. The administration and concerned agencies are keeping a close watch on the rising water levels and are expected to take further action depending on the situation.

With the rivers continuing to rise, residents of areas vulnerable to flooding have been advised to remain in contact with local authorities, follow official advisories and remain prepared to move to safer locations if evacuation becomes necessary.
