Three East Singhbhum Police personnel have been suspended in connection with the fatal stabbing of a youth outside a night bar in Bistupur after the victim, Himanshu Singh, died during treatment, triggering protests and demands for swift action.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Piyush Pandey suspended Assistant Sub-Inspector Ratan Kumar Das, ASI Rajesh Kumar Ranjan and constable Manoj Kumar, citing alleged negligence in the discharge of duty. The three were part of the patrol team that responded to the stabbing outside DD Pub & Bar on Saturday night.
Police said preliminary findings of a departmental inquiry indicated lapses in the officers’ performance, prompting disciplinary action to ensure a fair investigation.
Addressing the media, SSP Pandey said the probe was being conducted impartially and reiterated the department’s zero-tolerance policy towards negligence. He warned that strict action would also be taken against any other police personnel found guilty of negligence or misconduct during the investigation.
Tension gripped Bistupur on Monday evening after Himanshu Singh succumbed to his injuries at Tata Main Hospital. His death sparked protests, with family members, friends and local residents blocking the Bistupur roundabout near the Regal Building late at night, demanding the immediate arrest of all those involved and exemplary punishment for the accused.
A heavy police force was deployed to maintain law and order as senior officers appealed for calm and assured protesters that efforts were underway to arrest all the accused. Police said both the murder investigation and the departmental inquiry against the suspended personnel are continuing.
