Jharkhand has emerged as one of the top three performing states in the country in the Fiscal Health Index for the financial year 2023-24, released by the NITI Aayog in 2026. The state has been placed in the prestigious ‘Achiever’ category alongside Odisha and Goa, reflecting its strong fiscal management and financial discipline.
The ranking highlights Jharkhand’s robust fiscal performance, driven by prudent financial management, efficient resource mobilisation and balanced expenditure. The state-maintained tax revenue at more than 60 per cent of its total revenue, demonstrating a strong capacity to generate internal resources. Efforts to enhance non-tax revenue also yielded positive results.
Jharkhand also performed well in fiscal management by keeping its fiscal deficit below the prescribed limit of 3 per cent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), underscoring its commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline.
The state government continued to prioritise development-oriented spending by maintaining capital expenditure at around 4 to 5 per cent of GSDP. This sustained investment has strengthened infrastructure development and laid the foundation for long-term economic growth.
In addition, Jharkhand maintained a healthy debt profile, with its total outstanding debt remaining below 25 per cent of GSDP. The state also kept its interest payment burden under control, reflecting sound debt management and financial stability.
Experts believe the state’s strong showing in the Fiscal Health Index not only reflects its sound fiscal position but also reinforces its potential for sustained economic growth and development in the years ahead.
