The Ranchi district administration on Saturday launched an inquiry into alleged medical negligence and excessive billing at Raj Hospital after Chief Minister Hemant Soren directed officials to investigate the matter following public outrage on social media.
A district team led by Project Officer Manisha Tirkey visited the Main Road-based private hospital to examine records and initiate an investigation into the allegations.
The case pertains to the death of a patient whose family has accused the hospital of gross negligence despite charging a substantial amount for treatment. According to the family, the patient was admitted with a fractured leg but allegedly did not receive proper wound care for several days, leading to severe infection and deterioration in health.
The relatives alleged that the patient was later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after his condition worsened and that the hospital collected around ₹22 lakh during the course of treatment. They claimed the patient eventually died despite the heavy expenditure on medical care. Earlier reports circulating on social media had also referred to a bill of around ₹16 lakh, prompting widespread public attention. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Taking cognisance of the matter, Chief Minister Hemant Soren directed the Ranchi Deputy Commissioner through social media to conduct a detailed inquiry and ensure strict action if any negligence or wrongdoing by the hospital management or doctors is established.
Acting on the Chief Minister’s instructions, the Ranchi Deputy Commissioner ordered the Civil Surgeon to carry out a preliminary inquiry and constituted a district-level investigation committee to examine the case.
The inquiry team will scrutinise the patient’s treatment records, medical procedures followed, hospital documentation and billing details before submitting its report. Based on the findings, the district administration will decide on further action against those found responsible.
Hospital authorities had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report. The investigation is currently underway.
