A 28-year-old CRPF jawan was killed after being hit by a speeding Hyva truck on the Simaria–Chatra main road in Jharkhand’s Chatra district on Thursday, triggering protests by villagers over the rising number of fatal accidents involving coal transport vehicles.
The deceased, identified as Lakshman Kumar Yadav, a resident of Birajpur village, was posted in Jammu and Kashmir and had returned home just seven days ago on a month’s leave.
According to police and local residents, Lakshman was riding his motorcycle home from Simaria when a Hyva truck, returning after unloading coal at the Katkamsandi railway siding, allegedly rammed into his bike near Delho Ghat. He sustained critical injuries and was first taken to the Simaria Referral Hospital before being referred to Hazaribagh and later to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi. However, he succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to Ranchi.
Following the incident, angry family members and villagers blocked the Chatra–Simaria road near Birajpur, demanding the immediate arrest of the driver, adequate compensation for the victim’s family and stricter enforcement against speeding coal transport vehicles.
