The Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday demanded the immediate arrest of BJP leaders, including the Jamtara district president, who have been named in an FIR registered following the alleged disruption at Jamtara Sadar Hospital after the death of a woman and her newborn.
State Congress General Secretary Alok Kumar Dubey described the deaths as “deeply tragic” and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. However, he alleged that the incident was politicised instead of being handled with sensitivity and responsibility.
Citing information received from the hospital administration, Dubey said the woman and her newborn had been referred to Dhanbad for advanced medical treatment after their condition turned critical, but both reportedly died on the way. He alleged that following the incident, BJP leaders and supporters created a ruckus inside the hospital, misbehaved with doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers, and disrupted medical services, creating an atmosphere of fear among patients and their attendants.
Dubey said media reports indicate that an FIR has been registered against the BJP district president and some supporters. He demanded that the administration ensure a fair investigation and take action, including arrests, in accordance with the law. “The law is equal for everyone, and no one should receive political protection,” he said.
The Congress leader maintained that hospitals are meant for patient care and should not be turned into venues for political confrontation. He said any alleged misconduct with women doctors, nurses and healthcare workers, obstruction of government work or damage to public property is unacceptable and must be dealt with strictly.
Targeting the BJP, Dubey accused the party of attempting to derive political mileage from the incident and alleged that its fact-finding committee was constituted with political motives to target the state Health Department and Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari.
He said the Congress stands firmly for the rule of law, the dignity of healthcare services and the safety of medical professionals, asserting that strict and impartial legal action should be taken against anyone found guilty, irrespective of political affiliation.
