A trail of leaking liquor from a damaged mini truck led Palamu Police to recover 493 litres of illicit wine concealed in a secret chamber of the vehicle near Rabda More under Naudeeha Bazar police station on Tuesday.
According to police, the truck, which was allegedly transporting the liquor to Bihar, had developed a severe mechanical breakdown after meeting with an accident and was parked along the Chhatarpur–Naudeeha Bazar road. The leaking liquor alerted a police patrol, prompting a thorough search of the vehicle.
Officer-in-Charge Niraj Singh said the truck bed appeared empty, but police discovered a hidden compartment between the driver’s cabin and the cargo bed. A total of 55 cartons containing 493 litres of liquor labelled “For Sale in Chandigarh Only” were recovered and seized.
Police suspect the consignment was being smuggled into Bihar through the border route at Naudeeha Bazar, barely a few kilometres from the neighbouring state. The leakage occurred after several bottles broke during the accident.
The driver fled the spot and remains absconding. A case has been registered against an unknown accused under the Excise Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
