A grand district-level programme marking World Tribal Day 2026 was organised at Rabindra Bhavan Town Hall on Sunday, showcasing the rich cultural heritage, traditions and indigenous knowledge of the tribal communities.
The event featured Santhali and Paharia cultural performances, traditional music and dance, and a Tribal Fashion Show, which attracted considerable attention from the audience. The programme was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Megha Bhardwaj along with other dignitaries by lighting the ceremonial lamp.
Addressing the gathering, MP representative Shyam Yadavhighlighted the historic contribution of tribal communities and recalled the struggles of Birsa Munda, Sido-Kanhu, Phulo-Jhano and Tilka Manjhi. He stressed the importance of connecting the younger generation with education.
Municipal Council chairperson Sabri Pal described tribal culture, language and art as integral to Jharkhand’s identity and called for their preservation.
Deputy Commissioner Megha Bhardwaj said World Tribal Day was not merely an occasion for celebration but also an opportunity to preserve traditional knowledge and the community’s close relationship with nature. She stressed the need to protect indigenous food traditions, medicinal knowledge and environmentally sustainable lifestyles.
A Tribal Fashion Show featuring traditional attire emerged as one of the highlights of the event. Students also presented cultural performances.
People making outstanding contributions to tribal and community welfare, including Parganaits, village heads, panchayat representatives, ANMs/GNMs, Sahiyas and Sevikas, were honoured with certificates and mementoes.
Beneficiaries of various government schemes also received forest rights titles, bicycles and house keys under the Abua and PM-JANMAN housing schemes.
