Tension prevailed outside Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Nirsa on Friday after a Class 10 student was allegedly subjected to ragging and assaulted by senior students. The incident triggered protests by parents and local residents, who staged a sit-in outside the school demanding strict action against those responsible.
A heavy police force was deployed to maintain law and order as demonstrators vowed to continue their protest until the Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner personally visits the school and provides a written assurance of action against the accused students and any officials found negligent.
Parents alleged that the school administration has repeatedly failed to ensure students’ safety. Referring to the recent death of a student on the campus, they claimed the administration had attempted to downplay that incident as a case of drowning. They said the latest alleged assault has further raised concerns over student welfare and campus discipline.
“Our children come here to study, not to be beaten. If the school cannot guarantee their safety, we will withdraw them,” one protesting parent said.
According to the complaint, the Class 10 student was allegedly beaten with belts and physically assaulted by senior students as part of ragging. Parents claimed the victim sustained visible injuries and described the incident as an act of brutality.
Following the protest, Nirsa Block Development Officer (BDO) Indra Lal Ohdar, the SDPO, and local police officials reached the school. The BDO said the incident was being investigated and assured that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
The administration has appealed to parents to remain calm and cooperate with the investigation. Meanwhile, protesters have also demanded the implementation of a stronger anti-ragging monitoring mechanism to prevent similar incidents in the future.
