Jamshedpur, August 27, 2026: Marking the 167th birth anniversary of Sir Dorabji Tata, Tata Steel today inaugurated “Celebration of Sports: The Sir Dorabji Tata Legacy”, a special exhibition that highlights the extraordinary contributions of one of India’s foremost nation-builders to the development of sport and the Olympic movement in the country.
The exhibition, which opened in Kolkata earlier this week before culminating in Jamshedpur, showcases Sir Dorabji Tata’s vision of sport as a powerful force for character-building, national pride and social progress. Through rare archival photographs, historic correspondence, memorabilia, and curated narratives, it offers visitors a compelling insight into a legacy that helped shape India’s sporting journey.
The programme in Jamshedpur commenced with floral tributes at Sir Dorabji Tata Park, followed by the inauguration of the exhibition at the JRD Tata Sports Complex by D.B. Sundara Ramam, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel, in the presence of Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary, President, Tata Workers’ Union, Dr T. Mukherjee, senior Tata Steel retired executives and distinguished guests.
A pioneering advocate of organised sport in India, Sir Dorabji Tata played a seminal role in enabling the country’s participation in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, supporting India’s first-ever Olympic contingent. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and became its first President in 1927, helping establish the institutional foundations of India’s Olympic movement. The exhibition serves as a tribute to these landmark contributions and comes ahead of the IOA’s centenary year in 2027.
As part of the commemorative programme, Tata Steel also hosted an engaging panel discussion titled “A Celebration of Sports”. The discussion featured renowned sports historian and author Boria Majumdar, Olympian and Arjuna Award-winning archer Dola Banerjee, and internationally acclaimed archer, Padma Shree and Arjuna Awardee Purnima Mahato. The panel reflected on India’s sporting evolution, the significance of Sir Dorabji Tata’s contributions and the importance of sustained institutional support in nurturing sporting excellence.
The exhibition further highlights Tata Steel’s enduring commitment to sports development. Over the decades, the Company has invested extensively in grassroots talent development, high-performance training infrastructure and athlete support programmes, contributing to the emergence of numerous national and international champions. By connecting historical milestones with contemporary achievements, the exhibition underscores the continued relevance of Sir Dorabji Tata’s vision in shaping India’s sporting future.
