Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Wednesday reviewed the progress of the GIS-based Urban Management System being implemented by Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company (JUIDCO) under the state’s Urban Development and Housing Department (UD&HD). The project aims to establish a modern, transparent and data-driven urban governance framework across 49 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the state.
During the review meeting, officials informed the Chief Minister that Ranchi, Dhanbad and Giridih Municipal Corporations have been selected for the pilot phase. Aerial LiDAR surveys have been successfully completed in all three cities, while digital mapping, GIS layer creation and data processing are currently underway.
Under the project, geo-tagging-based property surveys, detailed mapping of urban assets, monitoring of water bodies and development of an advanced GIS-based digital platform are being carried out. The system will enable accurate digital documentation of buildings, roads, streetlights, electric poles, water sources and other civic infrastructure.
Soren directed officials to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining high standards of quality. He said the initiative would provide a scientific basis for urban planning and make the functioning of urban local bodies more transparent and accountable. He also stressed the effective use of GIS technology for strengthening revenue generation, improving asset management and enhancing civic services.
The Chief Minister further asked officials to analyse the experiences gained from the pilot phase and prepare a roadmap for the phased expansion of the system to other urban local bodies across the state.
The meeting was attended by Urban Development and Housing, Higher and Technical Education, and Tourism, Art-Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu, Development Commissioner Ajay Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary of Road Construction and Urban Development and Housing Department Sunil Kumar, Planning and Development Secretary Mukesh Kumar, SUDA Director Suraj Kumar and other senior officials.
