Shias hold mourning procession on Shab-e-Ashura

June 26, 2026

PNS

Ranchi

The Shia community in Ranchi observed Shab-e-Ashura, the ninth day of Muharram, with a solemn mourning procession held amid tight security across the state capital. Thousands of devotees participated in the procession, paying tribute to the martyrs of Karbala, particularly Imam Hussain, through elegies (nauha khwani) and traditional mourning rituals.

The procession commenced from Anwar Arcade near Vishwakarma Mandir Lane on Main Road and passed through Anjuman Plaza Chowk, Dr. Fatahullah Road, and Vikrant Chowk before culminating at Masjid-e-Jafaria in Ansar Nagar.

Participants said the sacrifice of Imam Hussain at Karbala continues to symbolize the eternal struggle for truth, justice, humanity, and resistance against oppression. They urged people to uphold the values of communal harmony, peace, and social unity.

In view of Muharram observances, the district administration deployed extensive security arrangements across Ranchi and other parts of Jharkhand. Police personnel were stationed along the procession route, while traffic diversions and crowd management measures were put in place to ensure the peaceful conduct of the event.

Meanwhile, preparations by the Sunni community for the 10th of Muharram (Yaum-e-Ashura), including traditional processions and Akhara displays, have entered the final stage. The district administration has already held meetings with Akhara committees and peace committee members, appealing for the festival to be observed peacefully and in an atmosphere of communal harmony.

Muharram commemorations across Jharkhand continue to highlight not only the sacrifice of Karbala but also the enduring message of justice, compassion, and unity among communities.
