Jharkhand receives 11 new GI tags, taking its total to twelve and marking a major milestone since Sohrai-Khovar Paintings became the State’s first GI-tagged product.

JHARCRAFT has achieved a significant milestone in preserving and promoting Jharkhand’s rich cultural heritage by successfully facilitating the Geographical Indication (GI) registration of Tussar Silk Sarees & Fabrics of Jharkhand, Tribal Jewellery of Jharkhand, and Bamboo Crafts of Jharkhand. This prestigious recognition safeguards the authenticity and identity of these iconic heritage crafts, enhances their visibility in national and international markets, and creates greater opportunities for the artisans and traditional communities who have preserved these age-old crafts for generations.
Jharkhand’s Tussar Silk is celebrated for its natural golden sheen, rich texture and exceptional craftsmanship. Woven by skilled artisans using traditional techniques, it represents one of the State’s finest textile traditions and continues to be a symbol of elegance and sustainable fashion.
Equally distinctive is Tribal Jewellery of Jharkhand, which embodies the artistic traditions of the State’s indigenous communities. Crafted with intricate detailing and inspired by age-old tribal motifs, every ornament reflects the cultural identity and craftsmanship that have been preserved across generations.
Bamboo Crafts of Jharkhand highlight the ingenuity of rural artisans who transform locally available bamboo into beautifully handcrafted decor, utility and lifestyle products. Combining sustainability with traditional skills, these products represent the growing appeal of eco-friendly craftsmanship in contemporary markets.
Along with these three crafts, GI registration has also been granted to Jharkhand Dokra Craft, Kuchai Silk Sarees & Fabrics, Bhagaiya Sarees & Fabrics, Dumka Chadar Badoni Puppets, Jharkhand Panchi Parhan Panchi Sarees & Fabrics, Kesharia Kalakand, Jharkhand Benam and Jharkhand Jadupatia Paintings, further strengthening Jharkhand’s identity as a centre of rich cultural and artistic heritage. Building on this achievement, JHARCRAFT continues to strengthen Jharkhand’s GI ecosystem by pursuing GI registration for several other unique products of the State. Applications for Mandar, Pyatkar Painting, Nimucha (Karni) Shawls, Deoghar Peda, Kusumi Lac, Lac Bangles, Sal Seeds, Mahua Flower, Karanjh Seeds, Raagi, Rugda and Dhuska are currently under examination with the GI Registry. Once recognised, these products are expected to further enrich Jharkhand’s growing portfolio of GI-tagged heritage products while providing greater recognition and livelihood opportunities for artisans, farmers and traditional communities.
