Congress – JMM to contest RS polls jointly to thwart BJP
A crucial meeting regarding the Rajya Sabha elections took place in Ranchi on Friday between Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Congress In-Charge K Raju. The alliance is formulating a strategy to check the BJP by fielding candidates for both seats.
Political activity has intensified in Jharkhand ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. In this context, Raju met with the Chief Minister at the latter’s official residence, where they chalked out a strategy for the upcoming polls. A prolonged, highly serious, and significant discussion regarding election strategies for the Rajya Sabha seats ensued between the two top leaders.
The names of the candidates are expected to be finalized within two to three days.
According to sources, the situation became completely clear during the meeting held between the Congress in-charge and Soren. As per the strategy, the Congress and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) will jointly field their candidates for both Rajya Sabha seats under the banner of their alliance. Congress in-charge K. Raju reiterated this point while speaking to journalists. Essentially, the alliance’s entire focus is on ensuring the victory of their candidates on both seats at all costs.
Raju stated that, given the prevailing political circumstances, both parties aim to demonstrate complete solidarity through this joint effort. Under no circumstances, he asserted, would a candidate from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) be allowed to win. Reports suggest that, in order to outmaneuver the opposition’s strategies, both parties are working on a plan to thwart every potential move—including those associated with “Operation Lotus”—that might be employed against them.
According to reports, the Chief Minister has indicated that the situation regarding his strategy for the Rajya Sabha elections will be made completely clear within the next two to three days. It is anticipated that the official announcement of the candidates’ names will be made shortly, following a final round of consultations between the top leadership of both parties.
It is noteworthy that elections for the two Rajya Sabha seats in Jharkhand are scheduled to be held on June 18. Despite lacking the requisite numerical strength, the BJP has decided to field its own candidate. The JMM desires to field its candidates for both seats, whereas the Congress party—invoking the principles of coalition dharma—is seeking one seat for itself.
It is pertinent to mention that securing a victory in a Rajya Sabha election requires the first-preference votes of 28 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). The ruling Mahagathbandhan collectively commands 56 MLAs. Given this numerical advantage, victory for the alliance on both seats is considered a certainty.
Since the JMM possesses greater numerical strength and holds a stronger position within the current political landscape, it aims to field its candidates for both seats; conversely, the Congress party is seeking one seat for itself by appealing to the spirit of coalition partnership.
Amidst this scenario, the BJP has decided to field its own candidate, despite having only 21 MLAs. Even if the coalition partners are included, the total comes to only 24 MLAs—four short of the required number. However, the BJP is confident that it will secure the necessary numbers.
