Registration fees waived on land donations for public purposes

June 1, 2026

PNS, Ranchi

In a major push to accelerate development and expand public infrastructure, the Government of Jharkhand has announced a significant policy decision granting full exemption from stamp duty and registration fees on land donated for government and public purposes.

The decision comes through two separate notifications issued on June 1 by the Revenue, Registration and Land Reforms Department, following approval in the state Cabinet meeting held on May 27, 2026. The exemption has come into immediate effect from the date of notification.

As per the new provisions, landowners who voluntarily donate their private land to the state government, its public sector undertakings, or for any public utility purpose will not have to pay any stamp duty or registration charges on the related documents. This includes land donated for infrastructure and civic development projects such as roads, parks, libraries, and other public amenities.

Additionally, complete exemption has also been extended to documents related to land identified and notified under the state’s rehabilitation and resettlement policy. This move is expected to simplify land transfer processes in such cases and reduce procedural and financial hurdles.

Officials stated that the initiative aims to encourage voluntary land donations for public welfare by removing the burden of high registration and stamp costs, which often discouraged individuals in the past.

The government believes that this policy will significantly ease the availability of land for infrastructure projects and speed up development activities across both urban and rural areas. With no additional financial burden on donors, the state expects greater public participation in development efforts and faster expansion of essential civic facilities.
