Palamu Police have launched an intensive district-wide anti-narcotics drive, codenamed ‘Operation Prahar’, to dismantle the illegal network involved in the cultivation, storage, transportation and sale of narcotic substances, including marijuana, poppy and brown sugar.
Launching the campaign on Saturday, Superintendent of Police Kapil Chaudhary said there would be “no respite” for anyone found in possession of narcotics, irrespective of the quantity involved. He warned that all offenders would be booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
“Quantity does not matter. Even a few grams of narcotics are as dangerous as a large consignment,” the SP said, asserting that the police would deal firmly with all forms of narcotics trafficking.
As part of the drive, police made two significant seizures in separate operations over the past two days. On Friday, Daltonganj Town Police arrested Nesar Ansari and recovered 91 grams of marijuana from his possession. He was booked under the NDPS Act and remanded to judicial custody.
In a larger operation on Saturday, Paton Police seized 21 kg of marijuana from the house of 55-year-old Ashok Ram at Areydana village in the Barwadeeh hamlet. Police said Ram was allegedly involved in cultivating, storing and selling marijuana. The contraband, packed in five plastic bags and hidden inside a large tin trunk, was recovered along with ₹10,560 in cash, suspected to be proceeds from the illegal trade.
SP Chaudhary said Operation Prahar is a four-pronged campaign targeting the cultivation, storage, transportation and sale of narcotics. He directed all police stations in-charges to intensify surveillance and warned that officers failing to act against drug trafficking would be held accountable.
Appealing for public cooperation, the SP said the month of July would witness an aggressive offensive against the narcotics trade across the district.
