Lohardaga Police arrested two alleged drug smugglers and seized 25 grams of brown sugar during a vehicle checking drive on the Chandwa-Lohardaga main road, marking a significant breakthrough in the district’s crackdown on narcotics.
Acting on a tip-off received by Superintendent of Police Sadiq Anwar Rizvi about the transportation of brown sugar for sale, a special checking operation was launched under the supervision of Sub-Divisional Police Officer Shraddha Kerketta. The accused were intercepted near the Manati petrol pump, where police recovered 17 grams of Mark A and 8 grams of Mark B brown sugar, with an estimated value of several lakh rupees in the illegal market.
The arrested persons were identified as Akshat Kumar (21), son of late Ajay Prasad, and Rohit Kumar (24), son of Arun Mistry, both residents of Chandwa in Latehar district.
Following interrogation, a case was registered under Sections 17(b), 21(b), 22(b), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Kudu Police Station. Both accused were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody before being sent to Lohardaga Divisional Jail.
SP Rizvi said the district police would continue their sustained campaign against illegal drug trafficking and warned that those involved in the narcotics trade would face strict legal action. He added that the drive aims to protect the youth from drug abuse and ensure a safer society. Police are continuing their investigation to identify others linked to the racket.
