Construction work for the boundary wall of the proposed RIMS-2 project has commenced in Nagri under the Kanke circle of Ranchi, triggering strong protests from local villagers.
On Thursday afternoon, foundation excavation using heavy machinery began under tight security, with a large deployment of police personnel and the presence of a magistrate at the site. The situation remained tense throughout the day as villagers voiced strong opposition to the project.
Several instances of escalation were reported, but police and administrative officials managed to keep the situation under control.
Villagers alleged that the work was initiated without taking them into confidence. They claimed that neither has their land been formally acquired nor have they received any compensation. Expressing deep resentment, they said they would go to any extent to protect their fertile agricultural land.
“We will now stay in our fields and face the situation. If needed, we will launch an ‘Ulgulan’ (mass uprising),” some villagers said, indicating a more intense agitation.
Sources suggest that a large-scale protest movement may begin from Friday.
It is worth noting that the Jharkhand government has identified around 122 acres of land in Nagri for the expansion of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) through the RIMS-2 project, one of the largest proposed healthcare infrastructure developments in the state.
