A 35-year-old government schoolteacher was shot dead in broad daylight in Jharkhand’s Garhwa district on Sunday morning, police said.
The incident took place around 10.30 am near Lalmatiya turn in the Salo forest area under Badgarg police station limits. The deceased was identified as Deepak Kujur, a native of Simdega district who was staying at his in-laws’ house in Barwa village under Ramkanda police station limits.According to preliminary information, Kujur was travelling from Badgarg towards Bhandaria on his Apache motorcycle when two men on another motorcycle allegedly followed him and intercepted him near Lalmatiya turn.
Witnesses told police that the victim pleaded with the assailants to spare his life, allegedly saying, “Hum de denge sir, mat maariye” (I will pay you, sir, please don’t kill me). The attackers allegedly fired two rounds in the air before shooting Kujur in the temple. They then fled from the spot on their motorcycle.
The incident was reported to the police, following which Badgarg police station in-charge Deepak Kumar Maurya reached the spot with a team. Kujur was taken to Bhandaria hospital in a critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.
Police have recovered the victim’s Apache motorcycle (JH 20 F 8585), one spent cartridge and four live cartridges from the spot. The body is being sent for post-mortem examination.
Police suspect that the killing may have been linked to a financial dispute, but officials said all possible angles were being investigated. Garhwa Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Shekhar confirmed the incident and said the police had obtained some leads regarding the suspected assailants.
“We have got some leads and are taking action accordingly. The accused will be arrested soon,” the SP said.
