Anita Kisku alias Babita Mahato, a woman Maoist allegedly associated with banned insurgent activities, surrendered before Giridih Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr. Vimal Kumar on Monday under the Jharkhand government’s rehabilitation policy for surrendered extremists.
The surrender took place in the presence of CRPF officials and Additional Superintendent of Police Surjeet Singh.
Addressing a press conference, SP Dr. Vimal Kumar said Babita, a resident of Gomia in Bokaro district, had been wanted in 18 cases registered across several districts of Jharkhand. He said the cases against her primarily relate to damage to government property and other Maoist-related offences.
According to the police, Babita was influenced by the state government’s “Nayi Disha, Nayi Pahal” rehabilitation policy, which encourages Maoists to renounce violence and join the mainstream. Officials said she is the wife of alleged hardcore Maoist Ajay Mahato.
The SP appealed to other individuals associated with extremist groups to surrender and take advantage of the state’s rehabilitation programme to rebuild their lives through peaceful means.
Speaking to reporters after her surrender, Babita Mahato said she was happy to return to the mainstream and appealed to other Maoists to lay down their arms and surrender before the authorities.
Police said further legal formalities and rehabilitation procedures would be carried out in accordance with the government’s surrender policy.
