Two doctors drown in Dimna Lake trying to retrieve mobile phone

A tragic incident at Dimna Lake claimed the lives of two young doctors from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College and Hospital in the early hours of Friday, leaving the medical fraternity and residents of Jamshedpur in deep shock. The two junior doctors reportedly drowned after one of them entered the lake to retrieve a mobile phone that had accidentally fallen into the water, while the other jumped in to rescue him.
The deceased have been identified as 26-year-old Sameer and 22-year-old Saksham Singh, both junior doctors at MGM Medical College and Hospital.
According to police, three junior doctors had completed their hospital duties around 11 p.m. on Thursday. After finishing work, Sameer, Saksham and their colleague, Yash, decided to visit Dimna Lake around midnight. What began as a casual outing soon turned into a devastating tragedy.
Preliminary investigations suggest that one of the doctors accidentally dropped his mobile phone into the lake. In an attempt to recover it, he entered the water and swam towards the spot where the phone had fallen. However, he soon began struggling in the deep water and reportedly lost control.
Witnessing his friend in distress, the second doctor immediately jumped into the lake in an effort to save him. Unfortunately, he too was unable to maintain his balance in the deep water. Within moments, both disappeared beneath the surface.
Their companion, Yash, who remained on the shore, escaped unharmed. Realising the seriousness of the situation, he immediately alerted hospital authorities and informed the police. Rescue teams, local divers and emergency personnel rushed to the spot and launched an intensive search operation that continued through the night.
The operation faced challenges due to darkness and the depth of the lake. Police personnel secured the area while divers conducted repeated underwater searches. After several hours of effort, the bodies of both doctors were recovered from the lake on Friday morning.
Rural Superintendent of Police Shubham Khandewal confirmed that both bodies had been recovered and that legal formalities had been completed. He said the exact sequence of events is being investigated and statements are being recorded from those present at the scene. The police are also examining why the three doctors had visited the lake after midnight and whether any other factors contributed to the tragedy.
