The announcement of candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election in Jharkhand has triggered political unease within the ruling INDIA bloc, with signs of strain emerging between alliance partners Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress.
The friction surfaced after Congress declared Pranav Jha as its nominee for the Rajya Sabha seat, prompting concerns and discontent within sections of the alliance. In response, the Congress high command has swiftly initiated damage-control measures to preserve coalition unity and prevent the issue from escalating further.
As part of these efforts, senior Congress leaders and party observers Bhupesh Baghel and Ajay Sharma arrived in Ranchi on Saturday and held discussions with Chief Minister Hemant Soren at his official residence. Political observers believe the meeting was aimed at resolving differences within the alliance and addressing concerns arising from the selection of candidates for the Upper House election.
Meanwhile, JMM has officially fielded former minister and senior Scheduled Caste leader Baidyanath Ram as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha election. Defending the party’s decision, Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji said Baidyanath Ram is an experienced and respected leader whose candidature was finalized after careful consideration by the party leadership.
“Baidyanath Ram is a senior and seasoned leader. The party leadership has taken this decision after evaluating all relevant aspects, and it is the right choice,” Maji said. She also praised Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s leadership and decision-making ability, emphasizing that the party remains united behind its nominee.
The tussle over the Rajya Sabha seat is being viewed as politically significant, especially with an eye on future electoral battles in the state. While both parties have publicly reiterated their commitment to the alliance, the episode has highlighted underlying tensions over political representation and power-sharing within the coalition.
For Congress, the immediate challenge lies in securing the support of its allies for its candidate while simultaneously maintaining cordial relations with JMM, the dominant force within the ruling alliance. Political analysts believe the manner in which the current differences are resolved could have implications for the cohesion of the INDIA bloc in Jharkhand ahead of the next Assembly elections.
Despite the ongoing negotiations, leaders from both sides have sought to project confidence and unity, indicating that efforts are underway to ensure the alliance remains intact during the crucial Rajya Sabha contest.
