Mukti Sanstha, a city-based social organisation that has been conducting the last rites of unclaimed bodies for years, performed the cremation of 39 unidentified bodies at the banks of the Jumar river on Sunday.
The organisation takes responsibility for the last rites of bodies lying unclaimed at institutions such as RIMS, where relatives often fail to come forward to claim them. The members perform the last rites irrespective of the deceased person’s caste or religion, following the respective religious customs wherever possible.
Mukti Sanstha president Praveen Lohiya performed the last rites and lit the funeral pyres of the 39 unidentified bodies. The final prayer was offered by organisation member Paramjit Tinku.
According to the organisation, it has so far conducted the last rites of 2,228 unclaimed bodies in Ranchi.
Members of Mukti Sanstha and other volunteers were present during Sunday’s cremation. The organisation’s continued work is aimed at ensuring dignity in death for those who have no family members or relatives to perform their final rites.
