$100 for a Sapling: Environment Day gesture wins hearts in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur

A unique act of generosity and environmental commitment captured public attention in Jamshedpur on World Environment Day when a fruit-bearing sapling, distributed free of cost as part of a plantation campaign, became the recipient of an unexpected gift worth $100 (approximately ₹9,500).

The heartwarming incident took place at Sakchi Market, where social activist Pappu Sardar was distributing fruit-bearing saplings free of charge to encourage people to participate in environmental conservation efforts. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, Pramod Ahuja, a Non-Resident Indian from Adityapur currently visiting from the United States, visited the market to plant a tree in memory of his late mother, Amrit Ahuja.

While selecting a sapling from those displayed outside Pappu Sardar’s Manohar Chaat shop, Ahuja enquired about its price. Pappu informed him that all saplings were being distributed free of cost on the occasion of World Environment Day and refused to accept any payment. However, moved by the initiative and determined to express his appreciation, Ahuja later returned and presented a $100 note to Pappu as a token of respect and gratitude.

According to eyewitnesses, Pappu initially accepted the note without realizing its value in Indian currency. On learning that it was worth nearly ₹9,500, he expressed gratitude and said he intended to gift the note to Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, whom he affectionately regards as his elder sister.

Speaking on the occasion, Pappu Sardar reiterated his commitment to environmental conservation and said that more than 400 fruit-bearing saplings had been distributed free of charge over two days as part of the World Environment Day campaign. The initiative encouraged residents to plant trees in the name of their mothers or sisters and take responsibility for nurturing them.
