Due to the presence of a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, Jharkhand is expected to witness a spell of heavy showers coupled with thunderstorm, lighting and gusty winds in several districts over the next few days and an orange alert has also been issued for the same.
The information shared by the Meteorological Department, Ranchi on Wednesday stated, “The low pressure areas over north Bay of Bengal off West Bengal and Bangladesh persisted over the same region at 08:30 am on August 12. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and tilts southwestward with height. It is very likely to form in to a well- marked low pressure area over the same region during the next 12 hours. Thereafter, it is very likely to intensify into a depression during the next 24 hours and move northwestwards along West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coasts.”
The above system is likely to have an impact on Jharkhand as well. Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over southern, central (Gumla, Ranchi, Khunti, Hazaribagh, Koderma, Ramgarh, Bokaro and Lohardaga) and northwestern parts of the State on August 13.
An orange alert has been issued for August 14 with a warning for heavy to very heavy rain accompanied with thunderstorm for Ranchi, Khunti, Latehar, Lohardaga Gumla, Simdega, West Singhbhum, Easr Singhbhum and Saraikela- Kharsawan.
For August 15, a yellow alert signifying heavy rain and thunderstorm has been issued for Ranchi, Ramgarh, Khunti, Hazaribagh, Chatra, Palamu, Garhwa, Latehar, Lohardaga and Gumla. On August 16, some places in the southern and central parts of the State may witness heavy rain.
The MET Centre, Ranchi has also issued a warning for thunderstorm and lightning accompanied with strong winds with a speed of approximately 30 to 40 km per hour for the days.
The data released by the Department shows that Jharkhand from June 1 to August 12, Jharkhand has received 22 percent less rainfall than normal. The State should have received 627.6 mm of rain during this period but has witnessed only 492.8 mm so far.
With a warning for heavy rain and thunderstorm, residents are advised to avoid open spaces, electric poles and standing under trees.
