Kharkai swells, water enters homes in low lying areas

The threat of flooding intensified in Jamshedpur and adjoining areas on Friday as incessant rainfall pushed up the water level of the Kharkai River, which was flowing around 2.75 metres above the danger mark.

The situation worsened following heavy rainfall in Odisha, which caused the water level at Bangbil Dam to rise above the danger mark. Two sluice gates of the dam were opened, resulting in a sharp increase in the inflow into the Kharkai River and heightening the flood threat in downstream areas.

Several low-lying settlements along the riverbanks have been affected by the rising water level, with flood water entering residential areas. Bagbera Naya Basti was among the worst-affected localities, where water reportedly entered around 300 houses. Residents faced considerable difficulty as they rushed to shift their belongings and move to safer locations.

The rising water level triggered panic among residents living in vulnerable areas. Many families began moving essential household items and valuables to higher ground as a precautionary measure.

The district administration has placed the situation under close watch and instructed residents of low-lying areas to move to safer and elevated locations. Administrative teams have been deployed to monitor the affected areas, while arrangements are being made to relocate residents wherever necessary.

Relief and rescue preparations have also been stepped up, with social organisations and local volunteers assisting affected families. Arrangements are being made for essential supplies, including food, drinking water and other necessities. Relief camps and temporary shelters are also being prepared for people who may need to be evacuated.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid going near riverbanks, flooded roads and waterlogged areas. People living in low-lying settlements have been advised to follow official instructions and shift to safer locations without waiting for the situation to deteriorate.

The Kharkai, one of the major rivers flowing through Jamshedpur, joins the Subarnarekha at Domuhani in Sonari. Its water level can rise rapidly during periods of intense rainfall, particularly when there is increased inflow from its upper catchment areas and release of water from upstream reservoirs.
