The inaugural edition of the Jharkhand T20 League, being held for the first time on the lines of the Indian Premier League (IPL), got underway on Wednesday at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. In a closely fought opening match, Ranchi Titans defeated Chotanagpur Royals by five runs to register the first win of the tournament.
The launch of the league was marked by the presence of former India captain and Jharkhand icon Mahendra Singh Dhoni, whose attendance at the opening ceremony and match added to the excitement among players and spectators alike. Fans turned out in large numbers, filling the lower tiers of the C and D stands of the stadium.
Batting first, Ranchi Titans posted a competitive total of 155 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Middle-order batter Rajdeep Singh led the scoring with a brisk 40 off 23 balls, including five boundaries and a six. Yuvraj Kumar provided valuable support with a quick-fire 38 off 23 deliveries.
In reply, Chotanagpur Royals fought hard but fell just short of the target, finishing at 150/9 in 20 overs. Captain Virat Singh spearheaded the chase with an aggressive 44 off 24 balls, striking six fours and two sixes, but his effort was not enough to take his side over the line.
The Jharkhand T20 League will run until June 23, featuring six regional franchises competing for the title. The participating teams are Ranchi Titans, Chotanagpur Royals, Koylanchal Super Kings, Dhanbad Diamonds, Jamshedpur Steels, and Santhal Strikers.
In a major boost for cricket enthusiasts, entry to all matches has been kept free, allowing fans to enjoy the tournament without purchasing tickets.
The league is being viewed as a significant step forward for cricket development in Jharkhand, providing a competitive platform for emerging talent from across the state.
