Due to the presence of a low pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, a fresh spell of widespread heavy showers have been predicted for Jharkhand over the next few days. Several districts are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rain from August 30 to September 2 and both yellow and orange alerts have been issued for the period.
As per the bulletin released by the Meteorological Centre, Ranchi on Saturday, for August 30 isolated heavy rainfall is likely to occur in the southern and northeastern districts including parts of Deoghar, Dumka, Jamtara and Giridih as well as the central parts of the State- Khunti, Ranchi, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Koderma Bokaro and Dhanbad.
An ‘Orange’ alert has been issued for August 31 as there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy showers at isolated places over central parts of Jharkhand- Gumla, Ranchi, Khunti and Lohardaga as well as adjoining northwestern parts including Latehar. The southern and northwestern parts are also likely to receive heavy rainfall.
On September 1, isolated heavy rainfall is predicted for northwest and adjoining central Lohardaga and Gumla as well as southern (Simdega) parts of the State while on September 2 isolated heavy rainfall is likely in the northeastern (Dumka, Deoghar, Jamtara and Giridih) and adjacent central (Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh and Koderma) parts of the State.
“A low pressure area formed over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal- north Odisha coasts on Saturday morning. As per the prediction, it is likely to move west- northwestwards across north Odisha- Gangetic West Bengal during the next 48 hours. Due to this heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in some parts of Jharkhand. Because of this system good amount of rainfall is expected and the current deficit which stands at -10 percent will come down further,” said MET Centre Director, Abhishek Anand.
The MET Centre also stated a possibility of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds with a speed reaching approximately 30 to 40 km per hour at isolated places for all the days.
The communiqué also informed that in the last 24 hours light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thundershowers was recorded at many places in the State. As per information received, a class VII student named Anish Oraon of Upgraded Middle School, Dadha, lost his life due to lightning in Chatra. It was during the Sports Day programme when the weather changed and the child was struck by lightning.
The weather department has also stated that maximum temperature is likely to fall by 2 to 3 degree Celsius in the State during the next three days thereafter no significant change in temperature is likely for the next two days. However with thunderstorms and lightning being predicted, people are advised to exercise caution.
