Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has launched a significant initiative to provide contractual workers with personal protective equipment (PPE) of the same prescribed standards and quality as regular employees. Described as a first-of-its-kind initiative in SAIL and the Indian steel industry, the programme was launched by the Director In-Charge at a special programme held at the Human Resource Learning and Development Department.
Under “Transforming Contractual Worker Safety through Direct PPE Provision and Digital Governance,” BSL will directly provide standardised PPE kits and digitally track their issue, distribution, recovery and re-issue. Earlier, PPE for contractual workers was provided by respective contractors.
The Chief General Manager (Safety & Fire Services) briefed the gathering about the initiative, following which senior management distributed safety kits to contractual workers.
The Director In-Charge said every person working at BSL, whether regular or contractual, deserves a safe working environment. He emphasised that safety is an integral part of the organisation’s values and providing equal-standard PPE to contractual workers is an important step towards a stronger and inclusive safety culture.
The PPE kits include safety helmets, lightweight polycarbonate safety glasses, disposable respirators, safety shoes, FR suits, ear plugs and canvas gloves. The digital system will facilitate effective monitoring and timely availability of PPE. The initiative reinforces BSL’s commitment to uniform safety standards and a safer, more inclusive workplace.
