The Jharkhand Congress on Friday organised a protest march and satyagraha in Ranchi against the alleged “purification” of a rally venue in Haldwani following Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s public meeting.
Led by Ranchi Rural District Congress Committee president Somnath Munda, party workers marched from near Ranchi College in Morabadi to Bapu Vatika, raising slogans against untouchability, caste discrimination and social inequality.
The protesters raised slogans including “Stop untouchability, stop discrimination”, “Long live the Constitution”, “Long live Babasaheb” and “Respect the Constitution, respect the nation.”
Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh said the alleged incident was not merely an insult to Kharge but an affront to the Constitution, democracy and the principles of social equality associated with Dr B.R. Ambedkar.
He said the Congress would oppose any mindset that seeks to divide society on the basis of caste and untouchability. “Our struggle is not against any individual, but against the mentality that seeks to divide society in the name of caste,” he said.
Other Congress leaders, including Satish Pal Munjani, Alok Kumar Dubey, Lal Kishore Nath Shahdeo and Kedar Paswan, also criticised what they described as caste-based discrimination and called for the protection of constitutional values of equality, liberty and fraternity.
The protesters concluded the satyagraha by taking a pledge to promote social harmony, equality and respect for the Constitution.
