Dumka celebrated the 12th National Handloom Day with a programme organized by Jharcraft at the District Industry Centre premises to honour the region’s rich handloom heritage and discuss measures for the welfare of local artisans.
Deputy Development Commissioner Aniket Sachan, the chief guest, said Dumka has a strong legacy in handlooms and handicrafts. He announced that the district administration, Jharcraft, the Silk Board and the Ministry of Textiles would work together to provide weavers with design training, e-marketing support and better market access. He assured artisans that while they focus on production, the administration would help ensure market linkages for their products.
Special guest and Jharkhand State Minority Commission member Ikrarul Hasan described handlooms as a symbol of self-reliance, cultural heritage and indigenous pride. He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to improving the socio-economic conditions of tribal and minority weavers and stressed the need to empower women artisans through modern design training and effective marketing.
The programme was attended by experts from the Union Ministry of Textiles, the Silk Board, and Jharcraft, including Satyendra Kumar, Sabiha, Mousumi Saha, Bobby Devi, Namita Hansda and Ruby Devi. Discussions focused on preserving traditional crafts, enhancing skills, integrating contemporary designs and expanding market opportunities for authentic handloom products.
Organised by the Jharcraft Dumka cluster under the supervision of Abdul Qadir, the event saw enthusiastic participation from weavers, artisans and government officials committed to strengthening the region’s handloom sector.
