Family seeks help for Giridih worker detained in Abu Dhabi jail for over a month

Giridih

A family in Jharkhand’s Giridih district has appealed to the government and Indian authorities for assistance in securing the release and safe return of Hulas Mahato, a migrant worker who has reportedly been lodged in a jail in Abu Dhabi for more than a month.

Hulas Mahato (40), a resident of Doodhpania village under Dumri police station limits, had travelled to the United Arab Emirates on March 11, 2026, after securing employment with a private company. According to family members, he was detained by Abu Dhabi police on May 28 along with two others—one from Jharkhand’s Bagodar area and another from Tamil Nadu.

Relatives claim that while the two co-detainees were released on June 11 and subsequently returned to India, Mahato remains in custody. The reasons for his continued detention have not been officially communicated to the family, leaving them anxious and distressed.

Back home, Mahato’s family is struggling to cope with the uncertainty. His wife Dhaneshwari Devi, who is reportedly physically disabled, his elderly mother Dileshwari Devi, and his two children have been seeking information about his condition and legal status.

The family says it has approached various authorities for help but has so far received no concrete assistance. The situation has drawn the attention of migrant workers’ rights activist Sikandar Ali, who recently visited the family and assured them of support. He advised the family to gather all relevant documents so that the matter can be formally taken up with government agencies and the Indian Embassy in the UAE.

The family is now urging both the state and central governments to take immediate steps to ascertain Mahato’s status, provide legal assistance and ensure his safe return to India.
