Tension erupted in Jharkhand’s Palamu district on Thursday after a fatal road accident claimed the life of a man, triggering protests and vandalism by an angry crowd. The incident occurred at Pokharaha Chowk under Medininagar Sadar police station limits.
According to reports, a speeding Hyva truck allegedly hit and killed Majid Alam, a resident of Karar village in Panki, around 12:30 pm on the Medininagar–Panki four-lane highway. Following the accident, grieving family members and local residents blocked the road and staged a protest demanding action against those responsible.
As the demonstration intensified, a section of the crowd turned towards a nearby police check post set up for security surveillance and vehicle inspections. The protesters allegedly damaged the temporary tent structure used by police personnel stationed at the checkpoint. Witnesses said the crowd attempted to uproot the tent and tore large portions of it, causing significant damage.
Police personnel present at the site tried to prevent the vandalism but were outnumbered by the agitated protesters. To avoid further escalation, officers moved away from the structure. Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge **Afzal Ansari** was present at the scene but faced difficulties controlling the large crowd.
The police check post at Pokharaha Chowk had been established as part of routine security and vehicle-checking arrangements, with officers deployed in temporary shelters.
The situation drew political attention when Ayesha Singh Kinnar, a leader of the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) and former mayoral candidate, arrived at the protest site and expressed support for the demonstrators. She reportedly criticized police actions and challenged authorities over alleged threats of legal action against protesters.
Additional police forces were deployed to the area to maintain law and order. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, while an investigation into the accident and subsequent vandalism is underway. No official statement regarding arrests or further action had been issued at the time of filing this report.
