In the quiet hamlets of Masalia block, a silent agricultural transformation is taking root, driven by the grit and enterprise of rural women. Backed by the Intensive Forestation and Cultivation (IFC) initiative under the Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society (JSLPS), members of local Sakhi Mandals across Dalahi panchayat are turning small, fragmented landholdings into thriving green enterprises, choosing bitter gourd and seasonal vegetable farming as their vehicle toward sustainable livelihood.
The initiative has gained significant traction across three key villages—Madhuban, Aguajori, and Shyampur. In Madhuban, 14 women farmers have embraced the initiative, joined by 12 in Aguajori and 18 in Shyampur, bringing together a collective cohort of 44 progressive women cultivators. Working on average plots of 10 decimals each, these women have brought approximately 4.40 acres of land under organized bitter gourd cultivation. Crucial seed support and technical handholding provided under the IFC scheme served as the catalyst, lowering input barriers and encouraging the women to experiment with high-yield horticulture.
Recognizing the risks of mono-cropping, the women have adopted a multi-crop strategy by interspersing bitter gourd with a variety of seasonal vegetables. This staggered harvest ensures that their households are insulated from market volatility, creating a steady stream of income throughout the cropping cycle rather than a one-time seasonal return. Beyond fulfilling domestic nutritional needs, the surplus produce finds a ready market in local haats, translating into direct cash earnings that strengthen household balance sheets.
The shift is marked by the deep hands-on involvement of women across every phase of the agrarian cycle. From land preparation and nursery raising to meticulous irrigation, weeding, and post-harvest handling, their dedicated labor is redefining local agricultural norms. The economic returns are fostering financial autonomy and personal confidence, setting a vibrant benchmark for grassroots women’s empowerment across the rural landscape of Santhal Pargana.
