Two new units at Koderma TPS under phase-2 and a third new unit at Patratu STPP are two major thermal power projects under construction in Jharkhand. Koderma TPS phase-2 consists of 2 units of 800 MW each adding up to 1600 MW of new power capacity. The third unit of Patratu STPP will add another 800 MW of power capacity.
This information was provided by Minister of State in Ministry of Power, Shripad Naik, in Rajya Sabha on July 20, 2026 while replying to question raised by Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani. During last 5 years, a total of 2780 MW of thermal power capacity projects were commissioned in Jharkhand: 3 units of 660 MW each at North Karanpura STPP and 800 MW at Patratu STPP being the first unit.
Nathwani has asked for details about the number and capacity of new thermal power projects plants commissioned, under construction and approved in last 5 years in Jharkhand. The Koderma Thermal Power Station is being developed by Damodar Valley Corp (DVC) which is jointly owned by Central government along with the Jharkhand and W Bengal governments.
The 3rd unit at Patratu STPP is being developed by Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), a joint venture between NTPC Ltd and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL). The minister also informed that Government of India has taken several measures to balance power generation needs with environmental sustainability like increasing the share of installed renewable energy (RE) capacity and its uptake and promoting energy efficiency in all spheres of life.
The share of non-fossil fuel installed capacity in the total installed capacity of the country as of 31 May 2026 is about 53.75%. In the written reply, the information provided stated that schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM KUSUM), PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, National Programme on High Efficiency Solar PV Modules, New Solar Power Scheme (for Tribal and PVTG Habitations/Villages) under Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM JANMAN) and Dharti Aabha Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DA JGUA), National Green Hydrogen Mission, Viability Gap Funding (VGF) Scheme for Offshore Wind Energy Projects have been launched to promote renewable energy across India.
