Governor Santosh Gangwar on Monday said that medicine is not merely a profession, but the highest medium of service to humanity. A good doctor does not merely treat the body, he also instils faith and hope in the patient’s mind. The harmonious blend of knowledge, compassion, and sensitivity constitutes a physician’s greatest hallmark.
The Governor was addressing the first Graduation Ceremony of Manipal Tata Medical College (MTMC), Jamshedpur, held at the college campus in Baridih as part of the 33rd Convocation of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE). The event marked a historic milestone as the institution’s pioneer batch of 133 MBBS students from the 2020–21 academic session graduated successfully.
Dr. Sharath K. Rao, Vice Chancellor of MAHE, formally conferred medical degrees upon the graduating students, who are now set to join the healthcare sector and contribute to society as medical professionals.
In his convocation address, Governor Gangwar described the occasion as a celebration not only of academic achievement but also of the graduates’ future service to society. He emphasized that education and healthcare are powerful instruments of social transformation and stressed the need to build a healthier and more equitable society.
The Governor noted that while artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced medical technologies are rapidly transforming healthcare, the essence of medicine continues to rest on empathy, trust, and human connection. He urged the newly graduated doctors to uphold these values throughout their professional careers.
Joining the event virtually, Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister Irfan Ansari reminded the graduates that a doctor’s responsibility extends beyond providing treatment. He said medical professionals must advocate for their patients, earn their trust, and serve as a dependable support system during difficult times. He encouraged the young doctors to reassure patients that they can lead healthy and fulfilling lives after receiving proper care.
Guest of Honour K. Vijay Kumar, Senior Security Advisor in the Ministry of Home Affairs, urged the graduates to pursue medicine with passion, integrity, and a commitment to lifelong learning. He highlighted the importance of teamwork among doctors, nurses, paramedics, and support staff in delivering quality healthcare services.
Addressing the gathering, MAHE Vice Chancellor Dr. Sharath K. Rao said MTMC has rapidly emerged as a respected institution in medical education, research, and innovation. He expressed confidence that the first graduating batch possesses the competence, confidence, and ethical values required to excel in the evolving field of medicine.
Speaking on the occasion, Somnath Das, Group President – Special Projects and Officer on Special Duty to MAHE, said the graduation of the first batch stands as proof of the success of the unique collaboration behind MTMC and its long-term value to society.
D.B. Sundara Ramam, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel, said MTMC reflects Tata Steel’s enduring commitment to education, healthcare, and community development in the region.
