The Meteorological Centre, Ranchi has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for July 23, forecasting heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms in the districts of Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, Lohardaga, and Simdega of the State on Thursday.
The Center informed that rainfall occurred in several districts of Jharkhand on Wednesday due to the influence of a cyclonic circulation. “The spell of rain continued in various parts of the State late into the night. Over the past 24 hours, rainfall of 139.2 mm in Hazaribagh, 112 mm in Lohardaga, 80.2 mm in Kanke, and 56 mm in Jamtara was recorded,” the Center added.
The Meteorological Department Scientist, Abhisek Anand said that a monsoon-related cyclonic circulation is active, extending towards the Bay of Bengal via Rohtak, Hardoi, Varanasi, Medininagar, Purulia, and Digha.
“Meanwhile, a second cyclonic circulation is moving towards Tripura and West Bengal, passing through North Jharkhand and Bihar. Rainfall activity is expected to intensify in several districts of Jharkhand due to the influence of these two weather systems,” said Anand.
From June 1 to July 20, Jharkhand recorded 33 per cent less rainfall than normal. While the State should have received 319.8 mm of rainfall during this period, only 261.4 mm has been recorded so far.
In the State Capital, too, rainfall was 19 per cent below normal; 331.1 mm of rain was recorded against the normal average of 406.4 mm for this period. Continuous rainfall has also led to a drop in maximum temperatures.
The maximum temperature recorded was 29.8°C in Ranchi, 33.4°C in Jamshedpur, and 30.2°C in Medininagar on Wednesday
