Ragging at MGM Medical College triggers NMC inquiry

A fresh complaint of ragging at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College has once again put the spotlight on student safety and hostel discipline at the institution. A first-year MBBS student has filed an online complaint with the National Medical Commission (NMC), alleging mental harassment by senior students and undue interference in hostel room allotment.
Taking the matter seriously, the NMC has sought a detailed report from the college administration regarding the allegations and the steps taken to address them.
According to the complaint, the student alleged that certain senior students subjected him to mental harassment inside the hostel premises. He further claimed that he was being pressured to occupy a room preferred by senior students instead of the room officially allotted to him by the college administration.
The allegations have raised concerns over the effectiveness of anti-ragging measures and hostel management systems at the medical college.
In response to the complaint, Jamshedpur Sub-Divisional Officer Arnav Mishra and Patamda DSP Dayanand Kumar visited the MGM Medical College campus and hostel facilities earlier this week. The officials conducted inspections and reviewed CCTV footage as part of the verification process.
Sources said the administration is examining all available evidence to determine the authenticity of the allegations and establish the sequence of events.
The college’s Anti-Ragging Committee has also initiated a detailed inquiry into the matter. On Saturday, committee members questioned several senior students and collected information related to the complaint.
College authorities stated that the investigation is being conducted with sensitivity and fairness to ensure that no student faces unnecessary hardship. Officials, however, noted that the allegations have not yet been substantiated during the preliminary inquiry and that conclusions will be drawn only after the investigation is completed.
The latest incident is not the first time MGM Medical College has faced allegations related to ragging.
On July 3, 2024, students reportedly complained that certain seniors had created an intimidating atmosphere in the hostel through late-night disturbances, loud music, alleged substance abuse, and misconduct. The complaint also included allegations of harassment and coercion.
On September 26, 2024, junior students submitted a ragging-related complaint to the National Medical Commission.
Earlier, on January 14, 2024, disciplinary action was taken against three students in connection with a ragging incident, with each student being fined ₹25,000.
With the National Medical Commission seeking an official report and the college’s Anti-Ragging Committee conducting its inquiry, the focus is now on the findings of the investigation. Students and parents alike are looking for assurances that the institution will maintain a safe and conducive academic environment.
College authorities have reiterated their commitment to enforcing anti-ragging regulations and taking strict action if any violation is established.
