Ranchi is set to script a new chapter in Jharkhand’s sporting history by hosting the prestigious Durand Cup for the first time, with the tournament likely to commence on July 26, 2026. Preparations for the event were reviewed at a meeting chaired by Mukesh Kumar, Secretary, Tourism, Art-Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, on Monday.
Officials discussed a comprehensive roadmap to ensure world-class arrangements, including stadium readiness, security, logistics, cultural programmes and spectator experience. The secretary said hosting one of the country’s oldest football tournaments would provide a major boost to football and sports culture in Jharkhand and could pave the way for international matches in Ranchi in the future.
The opening ceremony is expected to showcase a blend of sports, patriotism, Indian Army traditions and Jharkhand’s rich cultural heritage, featuring military displays, Army band performances and traditional folk and tribal dances.
Sports Director Chhavi Ranjan, Culture Director Asif Ekram and Durand Cup nodal Army officer Colonel Hem Chandra, among others, attended the meeting and pledged to make the maiden edition in Ranchi a grand success.
