The State government is fully prepared to tackle a possible drought-like situation and is committed to ensuring that the benefits of all government schemes reach every eligible farmer on time, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperative Minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey said on Friday.
Chairing a high-level review meeting with senior officials and district administrations, the minister directed departments to implement the state’s drought contingency plan effectively in view of the El Niño impact and the prevailing rainfall deficit. She said officers must ensure timely delivery of schemes and remain sensitive to farmers’ needs.
Tirkey instructed districts to conduct a three-day special registration drive under the Millet Mission to promote cultivation of low-water crops such as millets, pulses and oilseeds. She also ordered large-scale livestock vaccination in vulnerable areas and directed officials to ensure adequate availability of veterinary medicines.
Reviewing action against fertiliser black marketing, the minister said the state task force has conducted 436 raids, issued show-cause notices to 11 persons and registered one FIR. She warned that any irregularity affecting farmers would invite strict action.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Tirkey said Jharkhand has recorded nearly 54 per cent below-normal rainfall due to El Niño, with Palamu being the worst-affected district. Currently, paddy nurseries have been prepared in only 20-30 per cent of the state’s agricultural area. However, if the forecast of good rainfall over the next 10 days materialises, the government aims to increase the sowing area to around 60 per cent by July 15.
The minister also directed officials to ensure timely supply of quality seeds and fertilisers, implement development schemes within prescribed timelines, and expedite pending payments. She reiterated that the government remains fully committed to safeguarding farmers’ interests and minimising the impact of any potential drought.
