Students of Upgraded Middle School in Dumarthar, a tribal-dominated area of Jarmundi block in Dumka district, marked Raksha Bandhan with a unique environmental message by tying Rakhis to trees.
The students applied tilak on tree trunks, tied sacred raksha sutras and pledged to protect trees, prevent deforestation and plant more saplings. The initiative is part of the school’s ongoing green campaign led by headmaster Dr Sapan Kumar.
Under his guidance, the school has been working to transform barren areas around the campus into green spaces. Campaigns such as ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ involve students, parents and local residents in plantation drives and the care of saplings.
Dr Sapan Kumar said the ritual was more than a symbolic celebration and aimed to create an emotional bond between children and nature. He said trees provide oxygen, fresh air, shade, fruits and medicines and therefore deserve the same protection that people promise to their loved ones.
The school has also been encouraging students to treat plants as family members and take responsibility for their upkeep. Its Eco Club and Bal Sansad regularly involve children in environmental activities.
During the programme, students took an oath to protect trees, plant saplings and help create a greener and safer earth for future generations. Teachers, Eco Club and Bal Sansad members also participated in the event.
