Garhwa celebrated the 80th Independence Day with official functions and patriotic fervour on Friday, with deputy commissioner-cum-district magistrate Pashupati Nath Mishra unfurling the national flag at his residential office, the Town Hall ground and the Collectorate premises.
Addressing the main function at Town Hall ground, Mishra said the day was a reminder of the sacrifices that won the country its freedom. Referring to the struggle from the Revolt of 1857 to Birsa Munda’s Ulgulan, he said Garhwa, too, had contributed brave sons to the freedom movement, many of whom laid down their lives for the nation.
He paid tribute to martyrs and freedom fighters and said their sacrifice should continue to inspire people to uphold national unity and discharge their duties with commitment.
Mishra said the district was moving ahead in key sectors with government support, citing work in health, education, drinking water, roads, power, irrigation and tourism. He also outlined the progress of various welfare and development schemes being implemented in the district.
The celebrations at the district headquarters saw the participation of senior civil and police officials, employees of different departments, public representatives and a large number of residents. After the flag-hoisting, those present saluted the Tricolour and reaffirmed their commitment to the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the country.
Family members of freedom fighters were honoured at the function. Personnel and employees who had shown exemplary dedication in parade, prabhat pheri and other areas of duty were also given commendation certificates.
Mishra said freedom was not only a right but also a collective responsibility, and called on citizens to work with honesty and sincerity for development, social harmony and public welfare.
