The Bariatu police have busted a gang involved in smuggling narcotic cough syrup under the guise of the real estate business. A businessman, facing declining income in the real estate sector, had started smuggling the syrup at the behest of his friends.
Acting on this, the Bariatu police arrested the gang’s ringleader, Boxy Khan (alias Javed), and his associate, Saurabh Kumar Gupta, on Sunday and remanded them to judicial custody.
Boxy Khan is a resident of Bariatu Basti, while Saurabh Kumar Gupta hails from Radium Road in Lalpur. During a raid at Doctors Colony in Bariatu, the police seized a Mahindra Thar (registration number JH01GE-2211) from Boxy’s possession. A search of the vehicle revealed 122 bottles of banned cough syrup.
During interrogation, Boxy failed to produce any valid documentation for the medicines. He admitted to sourcing the banned cough syrup from Kolkata and supplying it to various areas in Ranchi.
Police investigations revealed that after a slump in the real estate business, Boxy established a supply chain for the narcotic cough syrup with the help of close friends. He supplied the contraband only to old acquaintances and individuals connected to the real estate trade, while concealing his actual activities from outsiders by posing as a legitimate real estate businessman. He used the Thar vehicle to evade police detection.
