IIT (ISM) Dhanbad secures 701–710 global rank in QS World University rankings

In a landmark achievement during its centenary year, the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, has made its debut in the prestigious QS World University Rankings 2027, securing a place in the 701–710 global rank band for the first time in its history.
The rankings, released by global higher education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), place IIT (ISM) Dhanbad among the world’s leading universities. Among the 52 Indian institutions featured in the rankings, the institute secured the 21st position, while ranking 11th among the 13 IITs included in the list.
Expressing satisfaction over the achievement, IIT (ISM) Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra said the ranking marks a historic milestone for the institute and reflects the collective efforts of its faculty, students, officers, staff, alumni and other stakeholders. He noted that the recognition highlights the institute’s growing academic and research excellence on the global stage and urged the community to continue striving for greater achievements.
Dean (Corporate Communications) Prof. Rajni Singh described the debut as a defining moment in the institute’s 100-year journey. She said the recognition would further strengthen IIT (ISM)’s global visibility and encourage greater excellence in education, research, innovation and international engagement.
The institute’s strong performance in research and global collaboration played a key role in securing the ranking. IIT (ISM) earned a Citations per Faculty score of 87.3, reflecting the quality and impact of its research output, while its International Research Network score stood at 43.2, highlighting growing partnerships with researchers and institutions worldwide. The institute also received a Sustainability score of 57.5.
The achievement builds on IIT (ISM)’s recent success in subject-specific rankings, including being ranked first in India and 21st globally in Mineral and Mining Engineering in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, further reinforcing its reputation as a global leader in the field.
