Third railway line between Tatanagar and Adityapur likely by Sept

Jamshedpur

Rail connectivity in the industrial hub of Jamshedpur is set to receive a major boost, with South Eastern Railway targeting September 2026 for the commissioning of the third railway line between Tatanagar and Adityapur.

According to official railway records, the third-line section between Salgajhari East and West Cabin (Level Crossing No. 139) has already been completed and is operational. The remaining stretch from Salgajhari West Cabin to Adityapur, passing through the Tatanagar station area, is currently under construction. Railway officials said the work is progressing on a war footing and has been assigned a time-bound completion target of September 2026. Once commissioned, the additional line is expected to ease congestion on one of the region’s busiest rail corridors.

The completion of the third railway line is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency within the Tatanagar Railway Division. Railway authorities believe the project will help reduce delays faced by both passenger and freight trains while enhancing the overall capacity of the route. The additional line will also provide greater flexibility in train operations, particularly during peak traffic periods, ensuring smoother movement of trains through the Tatanagar-Adityapur section.

In another major development, the Railways has accorded ‘Special Railway Project’ status to the ambitious Kharagpur-Jharsuguda fourth railway line project. The special status was granted on January 29, 2026, reflecting the strategic importance of the corridor for freight and passenger transportation. The project covers approximately 366.9 kilometres and involves an estimated investment of ₹5,089 crore. Railway officials stated that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently under examination by the Railway Board for final approval.

Simultaneously, construction activities are advancing rapidly on various stretches of the Jharsuguda-Bargehi fourth-line project. Officials said the expansion works are aimed at addressing growing rail traffic demands and strengthening the railway network across eastern India. The projects form part of a broader strategy to enhance line capacity on some of South Eastern Railway’s most heavily utilized routes.

Industry stakeholders and rail users are expected to benefit significantly from the infrastructure upgrades. With increased line capacity and reduced congestion, freight transportation is likely to become faster and more efficient, supporting industrial growth across Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal.

Railway officials believe the completion of the third and fourth-line projects will not only improve connectivity but also strengthen the region’s position as a key logistics and industrial hub in eastern India.
