Reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development and resource efficiency, SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) achieved significant milestones in circular economy practices during FY 2025-26 by converting industrial waste into valuable resources.
Among the key achievements, BSL became the first SAIL plant to utilize BOF sludge in sinter making, reducing iron ore fines consumption. The plant also recycled Decanter Tar Sludge in blended coal and utilized waste lime fines in sinter production, resulting in cost savings and improved productivity.
BSL further promoted resource conservation through extensive utilization of blast furnace and LD slag in steelmaking, railway ballast, road construction, and cement manufacturing. Various by-products and waste materials, including mill scale, flue dust, coke breeze, and ferrous sludge, were recycled as raw material substitutes.
The plant also generated substantial economic value through the sale of by-products such as granulated slag, coal tar, ammonium sulphate, pitch, naphthalene products, processed slag, and pig iron.
These initiatives have reduced waste generation, lowered greenhouse gas emissions, supported downstream industries, and strengthened BSL’s position as a leader in sustainable and resource-efficient steelmaking.
