5 killed in lightning strikes in Jharkhand

May 31, 2026

Pioneer News Service, Ranchi

Severe weather and lightning strikes have caused significant damage in Jharkhand. Over the past 24 hours, five people have lost their lives in lightning-related incidents across various districts of the state.

The deceased include two women and a 12-year-old girl. Fatalities due to lightning strikes were reported in the districts of Ranchi, Garhwa, Dhanbad, and Bokaro. Two deaths occurred in Garhwa, while one death each was reported in Ranchi, Dhanbad, and Bokaro. In Kulli village, located within the Itki police station area of Ranchi, a 12-year-old girl was plucking mangoes from a tree alongside her parents.

At that very moment, a lightning bolt struck amidst loud thunder, killing the girl instantly at the scene. Her parents sustained injuries in the incident. Meanwhile, in Garakhurd village—under the jurisdiction of the Kandi police station in Garhwa district—a 45-year-old woman also lost her life after being struck by lightning. The police are currently investigating the other reported incidents as well.

Over the last 24 hours, several parts of the state recorded substantial rainfall. Khunti received 19 mm of rain, while Ranchi recorded 8 mm. Simdega received 37 mm of rainfall. The highest amount of rainfall—77.2 mm—was recorded in Topchanchi, Dhanbad.
