The Jamshedpur bandh called by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Friday to protest the murder of Karni Sena youth leader Himanshu Singh and the alleged deterioration in the city’s law and order situation evoked a widespread response, disrupting normal life across Jamshedpur and adjoining areas.
Major commercial centres, including Bistupur, Sakchi, Jugsalai, Burmamines and Mango, remained largely shut, with shops, business establishments, educational institutions and even roadside eateries observing the bandh. Public transport was also hit, as auto-rickshaw services largely ceased after the morning hours, leaving private vehicles as the primary mode of transport.
BJP and Janata Dal (United) workers staged demonstrations at key locations, urging traders and residents to support the protest demanding justice for Himanshu Singh. The district administration deployed additional police personnel at sensitive locations, while senior officers monitored the situation throughout the day to ensure the bandh remained peaceful.
The shutdown also affected the adjoining industrial hubs of Adityapur and Gamharia, where BJP workers reportedly stopped buses carrying employees to industrial units, forcing many workers to return home. As a result, attendance remained low and industrial operations were disrupted during the first half of the day.
Educational institutions also witnessed the impact, with most private schools and colleges remaining closed as a precautionary measure, while several government schools left attendance to the discretion of parents.
Jamshedpur East MLA Purnima Sahu and Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy actively participated in the protest, leading demonstrations and interacting with traders and residents. NDA leaders claimed the bandh received overwhelming public support, reflecting widespread anger over the murder and concerns about law and order, while police said the protest remained largely peaceful under tight security arrangements.
